Cold sores, often called fever blisters and oral herpes, are highly painful blister like ulcers that usually occur on or near the lips or nostrils. They can also occur in other places, such as cheek, chin or finger tips.
Rarely do they appear inside the mouth. If they do, they will occur on the roof of the mouth or on the gums.
They are sometimes confused with canker sores. Canker sores only occur in the mouth.
Cold sores are caused by a virus and are contagious, where canker sores are more of an allergy sore - painful but not contagious.
- The Cold Sore Virus
The virus that causes cold sores is the herpes simplex virus - either type 1 or type 2. Most commonly, cold sores are caused by the type 1 herpes virus.
Both types, however, can cause sores anywhere on the body. Cold sores are the end result of the herpes virus replication procedure.
The virus enters your surface nerve cells and, in the process of creating new virus, will destroy the cell. It is millions of these destroyed cells that form the painful and weeping open sore.
- Cold Sore Symptoms
Here are some common symptoms in order of occurrence. You will feel a tingling/itching at the target site just prior to the outbreak. The area will then swell and several tiny, painful pimple like blisters will form.
These blisters break and merge, causing the painful, weeping open sore. You will probably get a fever, headaches and swollen lymph glands under the jaw. The sore then crusts over and heals - amazingly without a scar.
- Cold Sore Treatments and Cures
There seems to be a lot of wild claims about cold sore treatments and cures going around the internet. Like me, you may have tried some of them and found they don't deliver what they promise.
Fact is getting rid of a cold sore can be very easy. Preventing them is even easier. You don't need some "secret" cure.
