Cold sore symptoms can be quite severe and lay you up for days - or so mild you barely are bothered.
Cold sore symptoms, at the time you are first infected with the cold sore virus, only occur once.
These cold sore symptoms may include headache, fever, swollen lymph glands. Also, a sore throat is quite common.
They usually occur 10 to 15 days after first infection and last about three to four days. Quite often you do not get a cold sore this first time.
NOTE: All cold sore symptoms are caused by the active herpes simplex virus. This virus only becomes active to create new virus on the surface of your face.
About 90% of the planet population carry the virus by the time they are 10 years old. Most of the time it is latent and hiding in the nerve cells deep within the nerve fibers.
On average, you will get at least one cold sore every 9.6 months.
It is not uncommon for many folks to get four or more a year.
Your first of the cold sore symptoms is often barely noticeable. In the cold sore area, you will feel symptoms such as a dryness, tingling, itching or burning.
This indicates that you are in the first stage of a cold sore. The virus is moving to the surface nerve cells.
Your cold sore will occur in 12 to 36 hours.
You will notice swelling of the cold sore site and the development of small, hard, pimple-like bumps that are quite painful.
It is common, at this point, for you to experience fever, headaches, and a general tired feeling. Your under-jaw lymph glands begin to swell.
Your tiny hard bumps now swell, burst open and merge to form a large open ulcer.
Other common symptoms at this point are headaches, fever and running nose.
This is probably your most painful time.
You will find the lymph glands under the jaw are now quite swollen and painful also.
Your sore will be draining a clear fluid teaming with cold sore virus. You are dangerously contagious at this time.
In a couple days your cold sore will scab over and begin healing. It is still be painful to the touch.
Cracking of your scab is common and painful also.
Your headaches, fever and swollen lymph glands should now be going away. As healing progresses, you will still experience itching and irritation of the cold sore.
Normally your scab will fall off in a few days. This will reveal new skin.
But healing will still be taking place beneath - which will continue to cause you itching and redness of the area - possibly for another week or two.
At this point it is still contagious and can re-occur quickly.
Your fever and headaches should be about gone now. Your lymph glands should be greatly reduced.
During your final healing process, the cold sore could come back again. Keep using your best cold sore treatment during this time.
Just one more thing.
Cold sores can be spread quite easily to others or to other locations on yourself.
Please be cautious as the cold sore virus is very contagious from the first tingle to the final disappearance of these cold sore symptoms.
